Adekola Ayodele moved to end his marriage with Bolanle for domestic violence at Mapo Grade A Customary Court, Ibadan.
He expressed anguish about his relationship with Bolanle that is not peaceful, being a mechanic by profession. He said it was disrespectful of her and she used her sister to assault him physically, as well as threatened his life by attacking his groin.
Also, Ayodele alleged that Bolanle had falsely imprisoned him in an incident he was clueless about as a means of subduing him.
Furthermore, he prayed the court to grant him custody of their two children and restrain Bolanle from coming anywhere close to him.
Meanwhile, Bolanle who is a trader by profession was largely silent in relation to this. She justified herself as acting in self-defense and the incident started when their children were quarrelling over going to school.
But no peaceful solution was sought after by both families.
Ayodele physically attacked her before she admitted that she had actually reacted physically including threatening to choke him. She also accused her husband of neglecting their three children and herself, thus showing her lack of interest in remaining married to him.
The marriage was invalidated by the presiding judge, Mrs S.M Akintayo who ruled that Ayodele could not prove that he satisfied the requirement of paying bride price according to African traditional law.
There is no marriage bond to dissolve; nonetheless, on account of mutual consent towards separation, she declared a separate decree against them with a direct order for Bolanle restraining her from any further threats or interference with Ayodele’s life.
