Feyi Daniels, the founder of iReign Christian Ministry, was sentenced to life in prison by an Ikeja court for raping a female member of his church on Friday.
The Lagos-based preacher was convicted of rape and sexual assault by Judge Rahman Oshodi.
According to The Punch Newspaper, the Bishop claimed that three of the four women who accused him of sexually abusing them were plotting against him. He testified in his own defence.
The prosecution’s main lawyer, Babajide Boye, tried to prove that the Bishop had a ‘personal relationship’ with the four women.
Boye said that the Bishop had given N100,000 to one of the women for medical bills, paid school fees for another, and had a close connection with a third as a leader of his campus group at Akungba-Akobo in Ondo State.
The Bishop denied giving money to one of the women for treatment. He said,
When asked why the women’s allegations were all about sex, the Bishop said he didn’t know.
Boye also said that the Bishop used his role as a Pastor to influence people who came to him for advice.
But Daniels rejected this claim. The Prosecutor continued to question the defendant.
The defendant also said he did not change the WhatsApp messages between him and one of his alleged victims.
During the cross-examination, the prosecutor also wanted to present four statements that the defendant allegedly wrote while he was in police custody last year.
The defence lawyer, Adebayo Adegbite, opposed the acceptance of the statements. He said that the statements were not written by the defendant and that the Bishop signed them under pressure.
In his ruling, Judge Rahman Oshodi accepted the documents.
The judge said, “By section 9(3) and (4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State (2021), the presence of a video testimony of the suspect is desirable but not compulsory.
“I will admit the documents and later consider the evidential value to place on them. The objection of the defence is hereby overruled.”
