The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it discovered over 1,665 fake A-level results during the registration for Direct Entry (DE) of 2023.
The Board noted that corruption has become endemic in the process of verifying A-level results.
The Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, made the revelation during a visit by Nigeria Association of Colleges of Education Students to his office in Abuja on Tuesday.
Prof. Oloyede explained further that out of the fabricated results detected, 397 were from Colleges of Education, 453 were from university diplomas while the remaining ones were other types of A-Level certificates.
He opined that this demonstrates lack of value for certificates and stressed on the need to ensure that only authentic Advanced Level certificates are used for admission with measures like enduring.
Brooding over JAMB’s past operations; Prof Oloyede said that hitherto, JAMB relied on awarding institutions rather than conducting screening and due diligence itself for DE applications. This was however shattered when at Bayero University Kano it was discovered from a total number of one hundred and forty eight applications for DE only six had genuine certificates.
This finding prompted a meeting with stakeholders aimed at proffering solutions to this problem.
To stress the importance of this policy, JAMB has adopted the catch phrase “No verification, No admission.” This policy was introduced so that those that have not been verified will not be admitted
Prof. Oloyede listed 15 institutions which the board’s request for verification is still unmet by them. Institutions having over twenty unverified students are now mandated to pre-verify applicants before finalizing their DE registration.
The DE registration process has recently changed such that candidates can register while their schools do backend verifications; however, in order to complete DE registration, these fifteen non-compliant institutions must first pre-verify their certificate holders.
Profoundly, Eegunjobi Samuel commended Prof. Oloyede’s reintroduction of orderliness, trustworthiness and integrity in examination and admission processes in Nigeria.
Among other things it said when he spoke on Monday at a media briefing hosted by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) NANCES President Eegunjobi Samuel paid glowing tributes on Mr Oloyede who said: ‘For 2024 DE registration alone we made about 3 trips to Abuja’.
Mr. Samuel alleged that they were at JAMB national headquarters to express concerns from their members regarding ongoing issues with 2024 DE registrations as well as requesting more DE centers.
