Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Dalam, on Tuesday, called on ECOWAS to refrain from the use of force to restore democracy in Niger Republic.
Falana made the call during a two-day West African Bar Association conference held in Accra, Ghana.
He argued that ECOWAS could play into the hands of the enemies of Africa, having failed to use force to restore democratically elected governments when the military took over in other West African countries, Guinea, Mali, and Burkina Faso.
Instead, the SAN urges ECOWAS leaders to encourage the proposal made by the Chadian leader, Mahamat Déby, to mediate in the face-off between the group and the junta in Niger.
ECOWAS has already imposed a series of sanctions on Niger and gave the junta seven days to restore President Mohamed Bazoum as the country’s legitimate leader. The African Union has also kicked against the coup and has given a 15-day ultimatum.
