The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), on Thursday, described as ‘laugbable’ the recent calls for a Yoruba Nation in the South West.
There was concern over the likelihood of terrorists and their collaborators undermining the military’s efforts against insurgents.
It is understood that last Saturday, some people advocating for a Yoruba Nation dressed up like soldiers, and invaded Oyo State secretariat with an intention to take over the Assembly house. The confrontation with security forces resulted in 29 arrests.
During a press conference in Abuja, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations noted that such demands are man-made problems for which he had always maintained.”The IPOB demands in the South East obviously appeared selfish. Additionally, call for a Yoruba Nation lacks foundation. These cases show that we ourselves brought our security challenges upon us”.
He further stressed out that any act of going against Nigeria’s constitution including taking up arms against government will be met with resolute action and prompt severe military response.
According to Major General Buba, terrorists and their sponsors may attempt to malign the military after it has successfully attacked militants. The General warned that such enemies would distort the casualties from these actions as civilians rather than terrorist associates. He added that the military’s operational activities have been able to frustrate their strategic plans.
Tellingly, the demolition of a building linked with Mrs. Dupe Onitiri-Abiola’s broadcast on her pro-Yoruba Nation advocacy has been defended by Oyo State Government.
Authorities have reportedly pulled down two houses believed to belong to the group leader. One was located at Toye Oyesola Street in Sagari, Boluwaji area while Oluyole Local Government Area of Ibadan had another one.
The land Commissioner, for Lands, Housing, Survey and Urban Development named William Akin-Funmilayo said hazardous weaponries were discovered in those structures hence they were set ablaze.
Akin-Funmilayo said, “The demolition was two days prior after a High Court order made on April 16, 2024. The details revealed that the Yoruba Nation agitators used the place to keep dangerous weapons.”
Reassuring citizens of his government’s commitment to peace and security, he called on residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
