A United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois has approved the request from presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party for the disclosure of President Bola Tinubu’s academic records from Chicago State University.
US Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert delivered the ruling on Tuesday, ordering Chicago State University to provide Atiku with “all relevant and non-privileged documents” within two days. The ruling recognized Tinubu’s legal team’s argument regarding privacy privileges, clarifying that only “non-privileged documents” should be disclosed. Judge Gilbert stated, “This matter is before the Court on Atiku Abubakar’s Application Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782 for an Order Directing Discovery from Chicago State University for Use in a Foreign Proceeding (“Application”) [ECF No. 1]. For the reasons discussed below, the Application is granted.”
Atiku initiated this legal action to compel the university to release Tinubu’s academic records.
INEC had declared Tinubu winner of the presidential election held in February 25, 2023, but Atiku and his party claimed to have been robbed and are seeking to get justice at the Supreme Court having failed at the Tribunal.
