After the Elephants were thrashed 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe on Monday night, former Cote d’Ivoire star, Didier Drogba confessed that the national team faced a ‘real problem’.
The ex-Chelsea striker, who spoke to NCI, an Ivorian TV channel, after the match, said that Cote d’Ivoire needed to work harder — ask themselves right questions and take the right actions.
According to him, ivory Coast need to go back to the drawing board, and “not just asking the right questions, but also making the right decisions.”
The defeat to Equatorial Guinea left Ivory Coast third in Group A, behind Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
The country, which has won the AFCON twice, can still advance to the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams if Cameroon fail to secure a win against Gambia on Tuesday.
“For football and only football because today a nation like Ivory Coast cannot organise such a competition and, of course, get eliminated so early on,” he added.
“But in this manner, there is a real problem.”
Ivory Coast won their opening game 2-0 against Gunea, but suffered a 1-0 defeat in their second game to Nigeria.
The Elephant finished group A with. only three points, while Equitorial Gunea topped the table with seven points, same as Nigeria, but have more goals than the Super Eagles.
