The Yoruba World Congress (Worldwide) has called on Yoruba traditional rulers to immediately revoke all chieftaincy titles previously conferred upon former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The group also urged these traditional leaders to refrain from participating in any events attended by Obasanjo.
This comes, after the former President had ordered some traditional rulers to stand and greet him during an event in Iseyin, Oyo State on September 15.
Obasanjo’s action led to widespread condemnation, and calls for him to publicly apologize to the rulers. Unfortunately, he refused to do so.
In a statement issued by the group’s Secretary General, Engr. Stephen Ajayi, they stated that due to OBJ’s failure to apologize to the traditional rulers, they should swiftly strip him of his traditional chieftaincy titles.
Accprding to the group, traditional rulers should only attend events befitting their esteemed positions, emphasizing the need for a unified voice in preserving the Yoruba cultural heritage and the respect it deserves.
Furthermore, the group called upon the National Assembly to enact legislation establishing a Federal Ministry for Traditional Rulers attached to the Presidency.
According to the group, this move will safeguard and perpetuate cultural values and heritage.
The group want the ministry to operate independently from state-level ministries to ensure the utmost respect for Yoruba Royal Fathers.
The statement read: “We in YWC established in the UK is by this open letter, reject and dissociate ourselves from the actions of Obasanjo and call for a revisit of the constitution as regards the traditional councils.
“We hereby call on the Federal House of Representatives and the Senate to as a matter of urgency create a Federal Ministry for the Traditional Rulers attached to the Presidency, to manage, secure and sustain our cultural values and heritage.
“This should have nothing to do with the State or ministries in the state so that our Royal Fathers can get back the respect they truly deserve.
“We have waited patiently for Olusegun Obasanjo’s sincere and remorseful public apology to the traditional rulers (our Obas/Kings) present at the event and to the Yoruba race as a whole for defying our cultural heritage in an embarrassing and inhuman manner publicly, which was never tendered.
“YWC hereby advice our Kabiyesis’ to:
“Walk out of any event that he (Obasanjo) is present or have the power to use the microphone. Not honour any invitation that is not noble for the position they occupy going forward.
“Speak with one voice concerning our prestigious cultural heritage and the respect it deserves.Strip Obasanjo off all Yoruba Chieftaincy titles bestowed on him with immediate effect.”
Following this development, Obasanjo and his estranged wife, Mrs Taiwo have clashed, with the former President describing her as an imposter.
Mrs. Taiwo in response, revealed how Obasanjo just to beg her to stay with him and promise that she will never leave him again.
She also accused OBJ of having hatred towards every president of Nigeria since he left the office.
In her words, Obasanjo is the real problem, troubling the country. And he is a liar and a cheat who equates himself to God.
