Zoe Maguire, the mother of England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, has slammed the critics of her son following criticism of his performance in a recent friendly match.
The Three Lions recent friendly was against Scotland and won 3-1 in Glasgow.
Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, and England’s captain Harry Kane scored the goals, however, Maguire, who came on as a substitute, unfortunately scored an own goal in the 67th minute.
And as a result, Maguire was heavily criticised for the own-goal.
Zoey Maguire, however, took to her Instagram story to address the negative and abusive comments directed at her son.
She described her son’s treatment as unacceptable in any context. Also expressed concern for other young players facing similar challenges, while also praising Harry’s resilience.
Her statement partly read: “As a mum seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country.
“I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing.
“I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football.”
England manager Gareth Southgate has also condemned the abusive comments, describing it as “jokes”
