In a recent ruling at the Kaduna State Chief Magistrates’ Court, a teenager named Kefas Dauda bagged eighth months imprisonment for the theft of a laptop and two cellphones.
Dauda, who was sentenced on Wednesday, is from Barnawa in Kaduna state.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, presiding over the case, imposed this sentence without the option of a fine.
Additionally, he ordered Dauda to either pay N237,450 in compensation to the complainant, Williams Timothy, or return the stolen phones.
According to magistrate Emanuel, this judgment aims to deter others from engaging in similar criminal activities.
The prosecution counsel, Chidi Leo, informed the court that the case was reported by the complainant on September 29 at the Barnawa police station. He explained that Dauda had entered Timothy’s residence and stolen his official laptop valued at N450,000.
He also mentioned that Dauda had committed another theft, taking two phones valued at N225,000 from a different house in the same area.
Leo further noted that in July of the same year, Dauda had trespassed into the house of Shehu Hassan within the same community and stolen a plasma television worth N84,000. The prosecutor revealed that all the stolen phones and the television were subsequently sold to an individual named Raymond, who is currently at large.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported Leo saying that “he (Dauda) was caught in the community with the laptop which was returned to the owner, but the phones and television were already sold,l.
The charges against Dauda were based on Sections 98 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
