A group of gunmen reportedly launched an assault on the Afokang Correctional facility in Calabar, Cross River State on Wednesday.
According to Affanga Etim, the spokesperson for the State Command of the Correctional Service, who confirmed the incident during a press conference in Calabar on Thursday, one officer was killed in the attack.
An Assistant Superintendent of Correction, ASC, was killed in the exchange. However, no inmates were harmed or managed to flee, and the attackers did not breach the main facility.
The spokesperson assured the public that no inmates managed to escape during the attack and explained that when the assailants arrived, they engaged in a firefight with the security team.
Additional armed personnel have been deployed to the facility to maintain control.
During the attack, a mother and her six-year-old daughter were unfortunately struck by stray bullets.
