Pandemonium erupted during the opening ceremony of the 7th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, on Saturday.
Sahara Reporters reported that the chaos ensued when a gate leading to the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium suddenly collapsed, and injured a middle-aged woman believed to be one of the athletes.
Emergency services swiftly transported the injured woman to an undisclosed medical facility within the city.
the victim had to be transported to nearby hospital after it was reported that the stadium’s on-site medical personnel couldn’t adequately address her condition.
Prior to the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State athletes participating in the NYG had protested against subpar living conditions in their camp, citing issues such as inadequate food, water, electricity, and poor hygiene.
They accused the chairman of the state Sports Commission, Mr. Okowa and other officials of profiting from contracts related to food supply and consumables in the athletes’ camps.
These young athletes, aged 10 to 20, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of attention to their well-being, particularly in the areas of nutrition, water, and electricity supply.
