Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the abandonment of any democratic system that fosters insecurity and poverty.
Speaking in Oyo town during the inauguration of the rehabilitated 34.8-kilometer Oyo-Iseyin road, Obasanjo stated that democracy must promote peace, security, prosperity, employment, and societal well-being.
According to him, democracy that nurtured poverty and unemployment is a failed system of government.
The elder statesman also called for a re-evaluation of Nigeria’s democracy, asserting that the Western-style liberal democracy might not be suitable for the country.
He urged political leaders to embrace a form of democracy that prioritizes prosperity, poverty eradication, employment, and security for the betterment of Nigeria.
“Democracy that nurtures a lack of peace and security must be thrown overboard,” he said. “Democracy dividends must involve peace, security, stability, prosperity, wealth creation, employment and the wholesomeness of the society,” Obasanjo said.
“Democracy that nurtures poverty is abortion. Democracy that nurtures unemployment is a failure.”
Governor Seyi Makinde-led government were also commended for infrastructure development projects aimed at accelerating socio-economic growth in Oyo state.
