Former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele can now travel outside Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, according to the Federal Capital Territory High Court.
Emefiele was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu of the FCT High Court in November 2023. He had to pay three hundred million naira and provide two sureties of the same amount. He also had to surrender his travel documents to the court.
His lawyer, Mathew Bukka, had asked the court to change his bail conditions.
The court said he had to stay in the FCT and get permission from the court before travelling.
But today, the court ruled that he could leave Abuja as long as he stayed in Nigeria.
Emefiele was the CBN governor from 2014 to 2023. He was arrested by the Department of State Security Services in June 2023 for allegedly having a gun and bullets.
The DSS later dropped the charges, but the Attorney-General of the Federation accused him of corruption in August. He said Emefiele and a CBN staff member gave out fake contracts worth N6.9 billion.
