Nigerians on X (formerly known as Twitter) known as “Tweeps,” have taken to the micro-blogging platform to express their dissatisfactions on the tragic passing of a young doctor, Dr. Umoh Michael.
Dr. Michael reportedly lost his life on Sunday, allegedly due to working an exhausting 72-hour shift at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.
Colleagues from the Association of Resident Doctors at LUTH have addressed a letter to the Chief Medical Director, asserting that he was overworked.
According to the letter, Dr. Michael returned home at 3:00 a.m. after the long shift and tragically collapsed during a church service.
He collapsed and died at the United Evangelical Church on September 17.
LUTH’s Public Relations Officer, Omolola Fakeye, expressed uncertainty about the incident but promised to investigate.
Punch Newspaper reported that in an online platform Fakeye said: “It is not true that anybody worked for 72 hours. I have not been briefed about his death.
“We were at a programme yesterday (Monday), but I will find out; I can’t say anything now. I will check the medical report of what could have happened because anybody can say anything, but the medical report will show us what happened.”
Tweeps have reacted with sadness and concern for the working conditions of doctors in Nigeria. And have called on the need for better protection and rest for medical professionals, as well as addressing the understaffing issues in healthcare sectors.
An X user, Doingood tweeted; “We all need to be resting. Employers should please help us. May his Soul RIP .”
OgechukwuChime wrote, “He is taking care of others and forgot to take care of himself.”
“He lost his own life in the process of saving other people’s lives. God knows I can’t be this good. I no fit die to make you live,” @Kuwait_magic tweeted.
Camax3000 tweeted: “Overworked, Rest in Peace.”
“Lagos State Government should get more doctors from the already saturated labour market to assist. The daily pressure these doctors go through affects their health as well,” Mazi_Ibem wrote
