The last has not been heard of the controversy surrounding the Federal Government’s proposed RUGA settlement for cattlemen in Nigeria.
Though, the Federal Government Wednesday announced the suspension of the RUGA settlement programme, some groups in the Northern part of the country have frowned at the refusal of the Southern Governors to establish RUGA in their domains.
To this this end, a Coalition of Northern Groups is now calling on governors who are opposed to the RUGA settlement programme to reconsider their decisions within the next 30 days.
Spokesperson of the Coalition, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman said the controversy over the RUGA settlement is already causing disaffection for herders of Fulani extraction.
“While we warn all state governments that stand against the implementation of the Ruga Initiative to desist and give peace a chance, we place President Buhari and the Federal Government on notice that they must completely stop this raging madness within 30-days beginning from today, Wednesday,” he said.
The groups threatened to do this if the Southerns insist on refusing to accept RUGA:
“We remind the nation that so long as the Fulanis will not be allowed to enjoy their citizens’ right of living and flourishing in any part of the country, including the South; no one should also expect us to allow any Southern to enjoy the same in the North”.
