A dugout canoe or simply dugout is a boat made from a hollowed tree trunk. Other names for this type of boat are logboat and monoxylon.
This type of boat is basically used by inhabitants of coastal communities as a means of transportation.
Ahoada East Local government area of Rivers State is made up of coastal communities and hinterland.
Prior to the Local Government Council campaigns that eventually gave birth to the Incumbent Paramount of Ahoada East LGA, Hon. (Barr.) Benjamin Eke, a need assessment was carried out for the 38 communities that make up the area.
As a result, 10 coastal communities were in dear need of dugout Canoe, paddles and a minimum of two ferryman each for ease of transportation for farmers and farm produce.
Let us not forget that agriculture is the primary means of livelihood for the people of the area.
The third tier of government which is closest to the people at grassroots should basically concern itself with welfarism and that is simply what the Barr. Benjamin Eke has done by procuring 20 dugout Canoe for 10 different coastal communities, out of which two communities viz Ekpena and Odiemudhie have taken possession of theirs.
It is pertinent to note at this juncture that this kind gesture of the Local Government Council ably led by the Amiable Barrister Ben Eke has generated job opportunities for the people of the area as not less than 40 men have been engaged by the Council to fill-in the opportunities of ferryman.
With all sense of responsibility, the Chairman is doing his best with scarce resources even as we believe that there is still room for improvement.
Those who have shown genuine concern at the pictorial depiction of the boats are highly appreciated and be rest assured that Barrister Benjamin Eke can not lower the standard as he remains a man of quality and standard.
Let me enjoin all and sundry to join hands with Council Chairman as he is poised to spring genuinely positive surprises to ensure that the people enjoy democratic dividends.
