This story is about HIV infection. It’s really a shocking story to me but I think there’s one or two lessons to learn from it that’s why I am sharing. This family is close to me and so I will not use their names.
This couple got married in 2015 and I was the chairman of the marriage reception. They are an everyday couple with their highs and lows but generally they are relatively compatible and I can call them love birds.
The husband is from Imo State and at 36 he’s doing quite well in steel business selling iron rods and plates. His dump is well stocked. He has built a family house in Nkwerre, his village and building a six flat tenement house in Port Harcourt. When completed he’ll be a landlord and have five tenants.
The wife is running a supermarket. They drive good cars and live in a posh estate.
The only challenge in the marriage is that the husband like most men is a womaniser who pursues everything in skirt. She even reported him to me once that he’s dating his sales girl.
She was scared of HIV and STIs and begged me to caution him to desist from promiscuity and risky behavior because she doesn’t want him to infect her with any disease.
The husband is one of those men who never uses protection. His awareness of HIV was zero and to him using condoms makes sex boring. He likes it “skin to skin”.
Luckily for the couple late last year she got pregnant after two and a half years of marriage. God! See joy! Arrangements were on top gear for her to give birth in Canada. She had vowed that all her kids will be born abroad and the husband was in full support.
The wife is a university graduate but the husband is a primary school dropout who “served” an oga in Steel business and was “settled” and went on his own and succeeded.
Trouble started when she registered for antenatal at Braithwhaite Memorial Hospital (BMH) and routine tests was conducted for her. The result: Sero Positive for the HIV 1&2.
Although she underwent professional counseling before the tests she was devastated and screamed and started lamenting calling out the husband. She shouted at the top of her voice, ” Since I got married no man has “crossed” me.
My husband and I did HIV and genotype tests before marriage in 2015 and we we’re both negative. My husband is a Casanova. See what his jumping about has caused me”.
“Madam, HIV is not a killer. It’s stigma and depression that kills. We’ll manage your condition effectively and the baby will be born negative only you won’t do breastfeeding. If you take your drugs you’ll be fine and can have more kids. HIV is a bend, not an end” the doctor told her.
She will have none of this. Her ears was deadened to the counsels of the doctor and the sympathy of the nurses. Her mind was filled with rage.
“This idiot of a husband has destroyed my life. Chai! Me? HIV positive! Kai! I’ll kill somebody” she thought.
Immediately she entered her car and drove straight to the husband’s shop and jumped out of the car as soon as she got there and ran into the shop screaming at the top of her voice, don carry HIV give me oooo. See the paper. This yeye man don scatter my life. God go punish you”.
The husband hearing the wife’s voice was alarmed and ran out to see what’s happening with his workers. Neighboring traders and passersby gathered to watch the spectacle.
She seized the husband by the throat slapping him, spitting on him and casting expletives on him.
The crowd separated them and they entered the small office in the shop. She was a little bit calm by now. One of the husband’s neighbor said to her, “Madam, you big pass this na.
No matter the situation you for nor disgrace your husband like this. You for tell am make nobody hear. This nor be public matter”.
“Oga, shut up if you nor get better thing to talk put for the matter. This man don kill me kpatakpata”, she fired back.
The next day being January 7th the husband went to BMH to also test for the virus as requested by the doctor and when the results came out he was NEGATIVE to HIV 1&2.
The doctor advised him to come back in six months time for a confirmation test. He did. The results is still the same.
The couple are undergoing counseling on how to continue to have sex without the husband being infected. The husband is standing by the wife.
According to him he knows his wife. She has hot temper but she’s not promiscous. The doctor is thinking maybe she got infected through tainted needles while fixing her hair.
